Meet Georgia Torres, winner of the New2theScene Flash Fiction Competition 2026 with her evocative and quietly devastating story, How to Be a Lobster, now available to read at New2theScene.

Georgia is a writer and storyteller based in Bristol, working across fiction, poetry and film to explore our connection with the natural world. Nature is more than a backdrop in her work — it becomes a language through which she explores love, memory, loss, relationships and the strange ways the world around us can reflect our own experiences.

And nowhere is that more apparent than in How to Be a Lobster. Set around a windswept jetty, Georgia's story uses the sea, changing tides, limpets, storms and a solitary lobster to explore addiction, broken promises and the painful process of letting go. It is a story where nature doesn't simply mirror the human experience — it seems to understand it.

Georgia's own route into writing is just as fascinating. She describes herself as a reluctant beginner, having spent years with writing as something she might get around to "one day", before finally signing up for a flash fiction course in 2025. How to Be a Lobster emerged remarkably quickly — written over a couple of hours and becoming the first piece of writing she had ever finished. From there, a search for writing community, accountability and creative connection has helped her find a new voice and a new way of looking at the world.
